A few years back, frustrated whilst looking for free typefaces I embarked upon this side project as a place where I could curate and reference good free typefaces and share them with the world. That was back in 2010! The site has evolved over the years into this current incarnation. Fonts are organised by style as well as details on the number of free styles, whether the font has a variable version and also the applicable licence.

A new identity

I created a simple logo, both long and short form that could be used for different viewports, favicons, webclips etc.

The palette

The colour palette is taken from colours that exist within the imagery used on the site. These colours are used as background to the type samples as well as accent colours throughout the UI.

Born free!

When deciding on typography for the site I naturally turned to my own list of free typefaces. I went with the font pairing of Work Sans as the primary and UI font and for Display I used Rakkas which allowed to play around and have some fun with some of the larger headings.

Send me a postcard

After experimenting with different use of imagery I decided I wanted to create a slightly cinematic, slightly postcard, slightly weird feeling with the combination of vintage imagery and typography. I sourced a suite of images after scouring the Flickr Commons for images that felt like they belong in a shoebox at the back of your Granny's wardrobe.

A simple resource

The website has been well received as a useful and simple resource for designers to source free typefaces and also for font designers to showcase their work.
